Beekeeping Registration - New South Wales


You will require this biosecurity registration if you intend to deal with or keep honey bees in New South Wales. This registration is required even if you only have one hive.

An important condition of registration is compliance with the Australian Honey Bee Industry Code of Practice.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.


You may be exempt from this registration if you are authorised to deal with bees in another state and you do not intend to keep the bees in NSW for more 3 months in any 12 month period.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration, you must:

  • use a frame hive to store bees
  • have the capacity to comply with biosecurity duties and regulations
  • satisfy the Secretary that you are a suitable person for registration.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

There are several on-going mandatory measures to manage and control the risk of bee pests and diseases. These can be found in the attached documents.


Registration remains in force for a period (not exceeding 5 years) specified by the Secretary.


You must notify the sale or disposal of any beehives no later than 21 days after the disposal.

Approval time

Applicants will be notified of the Secretary's decision within 60 days.

Additional information

Any beekeeper or person working with bees, hives, apiary equipment or apiary products has a responsibility for managing biosecurity risks that they know about or could reasonably be expected to know about. This includes but is not limited to the duty to notify of becoming aware of bee pests and to prohibit the importation into NSW of certain carriers that are suspected to be infected.

Disqualified persons or entities

You may not be eligible for this registration if:

  • you have provided false or misleading information to the Secretary
  • you have a history of non-compliance with biosecurity legislation
  • you have previously held biosecurity registration and that registration has been cancelled
  • you are considered an unsuitable person for registration by the Secretary
  • there would be an unacceptable biosecurity risk if registration was granted.
