Container Approval - New South Wales

Description

You may require this approval if you intend to supply beverages in containers (e.g. manufacturing or wholesaling canned or bottled beverages). The purpose of this approval is to ensure that the beverage container is made from material that is suitable for recycling, and complies with barcode and refund labelling requirements.

If the container has already been approved for use in the supply of beverages in New South Wales, then you will not require this approval.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

This approval is not required for the following kinds of container:

  • containers designed to contain less than 150ml of beverage
  • containers designed to contain more than 3L of beverage
  • glass containers only designed to contain wine or spirits
  • containers designed to contain 1L or more of flavoured milk
  • containers designed to contain 1L or more of a beverage containing at least 90% fruit or vegetable juice
  • containers made of any combination of cardboard, plastic and foil designed to contain 1L or more of wine or water
  • containers made of plastic and/or foil designed to contain 250ml or more of wine.

This approval is not required for containers designed to contain the following kinds of beverage:

  • milk (unflavoured)
  • cordial concentrate
  • fruit or vegetable juice concentrate.
