Driving Instructor Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to act as a driving instructor. Licence holders are authorised to:

  • teach another person to drive a motor vehicle
  • test a person for the purpose of enabling that person to obtain a driving licence
  • for money or reward or as part of your employment duties.

Please be aware that licence holders must act in accordance with the conditions imposed on the licence. In order to safeguard the professionalism and standards of driving instruction, there is a strict application process that must be followed.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be 21 years of age or over
  • hold a current (full) driver licence of the relevant class (must be held for 3 years out of the last 4)
  • be authorised by Road and Maritime Services to undertake an approved course in driving instruction, and have passed
  • have a current working with children's check.

In summary, the application process will involve:

  • submitting documents and checks
  • undertaking tests (theory and practical)
  • obtaining a letter of eligibility
  • undertaking a driving instructor training course
  • a regulatory final assessment.

You are also need to provide the road authority with your name, number and expiry date of licence.
