Exemption from Bank Close Days - New South Wales

Description

You may need this exemption if you operate a bank, and you intend to open your bank on a bank close day. A bank is an authorised deposit-taking institution. Restricted trading days are:

  • Public holidays
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Sunday
  • Anzac Day (restrictions are in force before 1pm only)
  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day
  • Saturdays and Sundays
  • the first Monday in August.

All non-exempt banks must be shut on bank close days unless an exemption has been granted.

Eligibility requirements

This exemption will not be granted it can be demonstrated that it is in the public interest to do so. The Agency will take into account the likely effect on particular sections of the public, including:

  • customers of the bank concerned in any particular area
  • persons employed or engaged to perform services for the bank.

The exemption is granted only on the condition that, on a bank close day, the bank is staffed only by persons who have freely chosen to work on that day.

An application must be made in writing to the Secretary, NSW Treasury.

Approval time

An application for exemption will be determined within 40 days, unless consent for a longer period is sort by the Secretary.
