Honorary Registration as a Veterinary Practitioner - New South Wales

Description

This registration allows you to practice as a veterinary practitioner in New South Wales. A practitioner with honorary registration is not required to pay the annual registration fee in consideration of their long service to the profession.

Applications for honorary registration as a veterinary practitioner are assessed by the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for honorary registration in New South Wales you must hold full registration as a veterinary practitioner. You must also satisfy one of the following:

  • have been a member of the veterinary science profession for no less than 40 years 
  • are a long standing member of the veterinary science profession and are of or above the age of 65 years
  • your standing in the veterinary science profession is such that you are eligible for honorary registration.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

As a veterinary practitioner with honorary registration, you must inform the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW each year of the following information:

  • any crimes you have been convicted of
  • any impairments you have suffered that affects your ability to practice veterinary science
  • whether your interstate registration has been cancelled, suspended or has had conditions placed on it
  • whether you have been refused a licence or registration in relation to your work as a veterinary practitioner
  • details of any professional training or development that you have done.

Failure to provide this information each year will lead to cancellation of your registration.

You must notify the board of any changes to your name, address or contact details within 14 days of making the change.

If you hold honorary registration and submit a non-practising conditions declaration, you may no longer need to provide the Veterinary Practitioners Board with this information each year.

Your application must be in writing and posted to the Board's office, where it will be placed on the next monthly Board agenda.

Additional information

If you are granted honorary registration, you may be able to apply for a non-practising conditions declaration which allows you to remain registered while no longer acting as a veterinary practitioner.  

Any copies of necessary documents submitted to the Veterinary Practitioners Board must be signed by an authorised witness.

Disqualified persons or entities

You may not be eligible for honorary registration as a veterinary practitioner in New South Wales if you:

  • have been charged with a crime under specific laws or a crime that places a condition on your ability to be a veterinary practitioner
  • are physically or mentally unfit to be a practitioner
  • have been refused registration or licensing in another state or territory
  • have had a previous registration suspended or cancelled in another state or territory
  • are not of good character.
