Jockey and Rider Licence (Thoroughbred Racing) - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to ride a thoroughbred horse in a race in NSW. There are three variations of licence available:

  • Jockey: ride horses in races.
  • Apprentice jockey: learn to become a jockey with a licensed trainer.
  • Approved rider: ride horses in races at a registered picnic meeting (amateur races).

If you hold a licence to ride issued by an overseas racing authority, you may be permitted to ride in NSW subject to conditions.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a licence, you must:

  • hold the appropriate qualifications in accordance with the Rules
  • not be a licensed trainer
  • not be licensed as a bookmaker or bookmakers clerk
  • hold current public liability insurance.

Eligibility for apprentice riders and jockeys may vary.
