Offshore Petroleum Exploration Permit - New South Wales

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to explore for petroleum offshore. Petroleum means any naturally occurring hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbon, whether in a gaseous, liquor or solid state.

Permit holders are authorised to:

  • explore for petroleum in a specified area within three nautical miles of the New South Wales coastline
  • carry on such operations and execute such works as are necessary for that purpose, in the specified area.

The agency may invite applications for the grant of a permit in respect of a block or blocks. Please be aware that if petroleum is discovered you will need to apply for a production licence to produce petroleum and a pipeline licence to convey petroleum.

To be eligible, you must provide:

 

  • evidence that the exploration does not cover more than 400 blocks
  • proposals for work and expenditure in respect of the blocks specified in the application
  • evidence of technical qualifications and technical advice
  • evidence of financial resources available.
