Onshore Petroleum Exploration Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to explore for petroleum (including conventional and coal seam gas) over a specific area.

Exploration licences for petroleum will be granted in the form of graticular blocks (minimum 1 block, maximum 140 blocks) over areas considered available and appropriate by the agency.

Licence holders have the exclusive right to prospect for petroleum on the land specified in the licence. The purpose of exploration is to locate areas where resources may be present and establish the quality and quantity of those resources.

Please be aware that there is currently a freeze on assessing new applications for this licence.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must provide:

  • a map or plan of the intended area of land
  • a proposed work program that indicates the nature and extent of operations
  • evidence of your financial standing
  • evidence of a work program that provides for the carrying out of the proposed activities, such as community consultation and environmental management
  • evidence of your technical qualifications and the technical qualifications of your advisers
  • evidence of your ability to comply with the legislation and regulations (for example, a statement of undertaking)
  • all the requested documentation set out in the application form.

Applications will be assessed primarily on the work program proposed for the area in question.
