You will need this licence if you intend to explore for petroleum (including conventional and coal seam gas) over a specific area of land within New South Wales.
Exploration licences for petroleum will be granted in the form of graticular blocks (minimum 1 block, maximum 140 blocks) over areas considered available and appropriate by the agency.
Holders of this licence have the exclusive right, in accordance with the conditions of the licence, to prospect for petroleum on the land specified in the licence. The purpose of exploration is to locate areas where resources may be present and establish the quality and quantity of those resources.
Please be aware that there is currently a freeze on assessing new applications for this licence. No new applications will be considered until the Strategic Release Framework is in place.It is recommended you consult with the Agency's petroleum geologists prior to applying for this licence.
