Opal Prospecting Licence - New South Wales


You will require this licence if you intend to prospect for opals within an opal prospecting area.

Prospecting is carrying out works on, or removing samples from, land for the purpose of testing its mineral bearing qualities. An opal prospecting area is an area of prescribed land the Minister has determined may be prospected for opals, prescribed land may include crown land or land within a reserve.

If your application is successful you will be granted an opal prospecting block, this is a designated area of less than 500 hectares in which you may conduct your intended prospecting activities.

Please be aware, this licence only permits you to prospect for opals, it does not grant you permission to extract and sell opals.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be 18 years of age or older
  • provide details of the land where proposed opal prospecting will take place
  • provide details of the methods used for prospecting
  • provide details of the measures to be taken to protect / minimise harm to the environment.
