You need to be registered to practise as a paramedic. ‘Practising’ means any role, whether paid or not, where someone uses their skills and knowledge as a health practitioner in their profession, including both clincal and non-clinical activities.
Professionals and volunteers who provide emergency, unscheduled and out of hospital care will not need this registration as long as they do not represent themselves as a paramedic. This includes first aiders, first responders, ambulance officers, medics and emergency medical technicians.
Students who are enrolled in a Board-approved program of study that leads to a qualification in paramedicine must be registered. The teritary education provider will provide the registration on the student's behalf at the start of their study program.
There are three different types of registration offered to practitioners:
- general
- limited
- non-practising.
