Radiation User Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to use regulated radioactive material. Uses of radioactive material requiring this licence include the operation, use in the process of manufacturing, possession, handling or manipulation of regulated material including:

  • sealed source devices
  • ionising radiation apparatus
  • any radioactive substances
  • some non-ionising radiation apparatus.

This licence is designed to ensure that the use of these substances is safe and does not have a negative impact on the surrounding community and environment.

Occupations that may need this licence include chiropractors, dentists, general practitioners, medical specialists, nuclear medicine physicians, nurses, radiographers, scientists, service engineers, technologists, tertiary lecturers and veterinarians. You may not need this licence if you intend to use certain types of low-risk radioactive material, or if you intend to use radioactive material in the course of certain medical, dental or scientific activities.

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be a fit and proper person
  • hold knowledge of the relevant radiation safety principles and practices.

You may only apply for this licence as an individual or an individual member of a company. A licence obtained by an individual within a company does not extend to others within the company.
