Registration and Accreditation of a Non-Government School - New South Wales

Description

You will need this authorisation if you intend to operate a non-government primary, secondary or special education school. This registration applies to all non-government schools, which typically operate during normal school hours and provide a full education based on established syllabuses. Individual or systems of schools may apply.

Registration is a non-government school's licence to operate, provided that the requirements of all relevant legislation are met. Accreditation authorises a non-government school to nominate students for the award of the School Certificate and / or the Higher School Certificate.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration you must:

  • make an application by the approved method and pay any associated application and insurance costs
  • have a proprietor / principal that is considered an appropriate legal entity for the purposes of registration
  • ensure teaching staff have the necessary experience and qualifications
  • ensure that the curriculum meets the relevant requirements
  • have satisfactory buildings and premises
  • have adequate educational facilities
  • have policies and procedures in place to ensure the school meets the legislative obligations in relation to child protection, student welfare, discipline and fairness
  • ensure each individual working in the school is responsible, and a fit and proper person to hold their position
  • be willing and able to comply with any other requirements of the Authority during the initial registration and accreditation process, and for future registration renewal consideration.

Schools will be assessed around the core classifications of corporate governance, teaching standards, student welfare, educational programs, boarding facilities, and public reporting.

Duration

Initial registration is provisional for a maximum of 12 months.
