Registration of a Horse (Thoroughbred Racing) - New South Wales


Owners of thoroughbred race horses in NSW need to register their horse(s) in order to be entered into and run in any race or official trial. Registration refers to the official naming of a horse for racing or breeding. Horses that are unnamed need to be registered before they can be entered into official trials or races.

Please be aware that:

  • Any horse registered in a country other than Australia may be endorsed to race in Australia for twelve months.
  • You need to comply with the specified rules and your registration may be subject to conditions. Please refer to the rules for more information on the types of conditions that may be set.

Eligibility requirements

Your application to register a horse must contain or be accompanied by the following particulars:

In respect of the horse's ownership:

  • name and signature of each owner, date of birth and usual address
  • if the horse is owned by a Company, the name of the Company and its registered address
  • in the case of a horse owned by a syndicate, the name of the syndicate and the names of the trustees or registered manager thereof and the usual address of each of them.

In respect of a horse, its:

  • age
  • sex
  • colour
  • pedigree
  • brands and markings
  • microchip number if applicable
  • veterinary Identification Certificate or Foal Identification Card.
