Scientific Purposes Permit - New South Wales

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to possess and use a firearm for the purposes of conducting legitimate scientific research (research endorsed by a legitimate research body or university).

You will need to establish the basis of the research and in particular the need for firearms in the conduct of the research.

This permit also authorises specified employees to be listed on the permit to use and possess a firearm to assist in the scientific research. The acquisition of firearms are limited to longarms, pistols and tranquilliser and these need to be registered.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • provide a certificate of successful completion of a firearms safety training course (if required)
  • provide written confirmation of details of the research project, purpose of the project, duration and location of the research to be conducted
  • show that the research is legitimate scientific research
  • show that the firearm is necessary in the conduct of that research
  • provide proof of identity (if no other NSW firearms licence or permit is held or been held).

Businesses, clubs or other organisations must supply their ABN, ACN, business registration certificate and public liability insurance documentation.

You may also need to complete an approved firearms safety training course. This requirement is dependent on whether you have previously held a firearms licence or permit in New South Wales.
