Tattooist Licence - New South Wales


You will need this licence to perform body art tattooing procedure for fee or reward. This licence is required to perform any tattooing procedure, even if you are conducting this work in a licensed premises.

Body art tattooing is defined as any tattooing for decorative purposes. If you will be only conducting cosmetic tattooing, you are exempt from this licence.

Please note that only medical practitioners may perform eyeball tattooing and that this licence does not authorise you to do so.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be an Australian citizen or resident
  • be a fit and proper person (this will include a national police check)
  • not have any close associates (i.e. individuals with an interest in the business, or employees) who are not fit and proper people
  • not be a controlled member of a declared organisation under the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2012.

Please be aware that as part of the application process your fingerprints and palm prints will be recorded by NSW Police.

If the details you supply as part of your application change while your application is being considered, then you have seven business days to supply notice of the change, or you may be fined.
