Approval to Become an Approved Association - Northern Territory

Description

You can apply to become an approved association if you operate a community organisation with at least 10 members and do business in the Northern Territory that carries out business for any of the following purposes:

  • religious, educational, benevolent or charitable
  • provides medical treatment or attention
  • promotes or encourages literature, science art or cultural activity
  • recreation or amusement
  • beautifying or improving a community centre.

If you are approved, you can conduct community lotteries and raffles including any of the following:

  • raffles with $5,000 or less in total ticket sales
  • tipping competitions and mini-lotto offering total prizes of less than $5,000
  • bingo, sweepstakes and Calcuttas
  • minor or major lotteries where the total value of the tickets is more than $5,000 - subject to approval
  • operate ticketing machines - subject to approval
  • lottery-type games of chance provided the games and prizes offered are not prohibited.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be will eligible you must:

  • be a community organisation with at least 10 members
  • have a purpose that is of benefit to the community and is approved by the Director
  • appoint an authorised person to act as the representative responsible for running the association's lotteries and raffles
  • provide a copy of the certificate of incorporation of the association OR a certified copy of the association's constitution if not incorporated.

You are not automatically eligible for approval if you are incorporated under the Associations Act, but this will be highly regarded.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

To maintain this approval you must:

  • notify the Director within 14 days of any change in details, including change of office holders, contact details and number of members
  • submit an update of the associations details within 14 days of every annual general meeting
  • have all financial activity relating to all games conducted during the financial year audited by a registered company auditor.

Duration

Until revoked, suspended or cancelled.
