Commercial Aquaculture Licence - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to undertake commercial aquaculture. Commercial aquaculture is the breeding or farming of fish or aquatic life in large scale commercial facilities with a total water volume of more than 10,000 litres.

Any new licence application must be preceded by a business proposal detailing species to be farmed, area of operation and infrastructure development undertaken or proposed.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you will need to:

  • identify the site you intend to use
  • prepare a notice of intent
  • provide details of the species of fish you will keep
  • provide details of the gear that you intend to use
  • provide plans relating to the construction of the aquaculture facility
  • provide a proposed plan of operation.

You may also need to acquire the following approvals before starting your aquaculture farm:

  • water extraction licence
  • waste discharge licence
  • permit to construct or alter works - if a dam is involved
  • development consent
  • land clearing permit
  • Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority Certificate.
