Licensing of Premises to Perform Electroconvulsive Therapy - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to administer electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

ECT is a procedure performed under general anaesthesia and muscle relaxation, in which modified seizures, induced by the selective passage of an electrical current through the brain are used for therapeutic purposes. ECT is most commonly used to treat severe depression but is also used as a treatment option for other serious mental illnesses such as mania, schizophrenia, catatonia and other neuropsychiatric conditions.

  • you are a suitable person to hold the licence

  • the professionals who will perform the ECT on the premises are qualified.
