Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals - Intensive Husbandry of Rabbits - Northern Territory

Description

You will need to comply with this code if you intend to be responsible for the welfare of rabbits under both intensive, deep litter and outdoor litter systems.

Good welfare of farmed rabbits ensures that rabbits cope well within their environment and that factors such as growth, reproductive performance, disease levels, injuries and death rates are within industry standards.

The code prescribes standards to ensure that rabbits have:

  • accommodation which provides protection from the elements and does not harm or cause undue discomfort
  • freedom of movement to stand, stretch, turn around and lie down
  • readily accessible food and water
  • rapid recognition and treatment of injury and disease.
