You will need a mud crab fishery licence if you intend to commercially fish for crabs in the Northern Territory. There are 49 licences for crab fishing in the Northern Territory and all are currently allocated. Each licence is allowed 60 pots.
Commercial crabbing takes place primarily in the Gulf of Carpentaria and more than 99% of the commercial catch is the giant mud crab. You must use marine pots that comply with the relevant fishery regulations. Pots must have a float attached marked with the vessel identification number. The pot must be less than half a cubic metre in volume and no bigger than 1 metre across in any direction.
