This licence permits an accredited operator to operate a Multipurpose Taxi (MPT) for hire or reward for the carriage of at least four passengers in addition to at least one passenger in a wheelchair.
The MPT must provide a priority service to wheelchair-bound people, and at other times, may be operated as a normal taxi. The MPT is permitted to stand for hire in designated taxi ranks and respond to ad hoc hails or pre-arranged bookings.
The Northern Territory government has placed a cap on the maximum number of MPT's in Darwin and Alice Springs. From 1 February 2018, a $1 per trip levy was introduced in the Northern Territory on all trips of point to point transport services including Taxi's and must be paid on a monthly basis at the end of the month.
