You will need an ornamental aquaculture licence if you are a small-scale aquarium hobbyist and intend to breed and sell fish, aquatic plants and invertebrate. The facility must hold less than 10,000 litres of water. Fish can be sold to other licence holders for display or resale or to members of the public, not purchasing fish or aquatic life for resale.
If you are planning to sell aquatic life from home there are other permits and approvals you will need to give some consideration to before applying for an ornamental aquaculture licence, these are as follows:
- limits on the size of a business that can be run from home
- planning requirements for house alterations
- although unlikely for a hobby aquarium, a water extraction licence or waste discharge licence may be needed if water is to be used other than from the domestic supply, particularly large amounts of water.
Once you have the necessary permits and approvals you can prepare a proposal for an ornamental aquaculture licence.
