Permit to Interfere with a Waterway - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to undertake any construction or works which may affect a waterway. This includes constructing a new waterway or changing an existing waterway:

  • shape
  • volume, speed or direction of water flow
  • bed or bank stability.

A waterway includes:

  • a river, creek, stream or watercourse
  • a lake, lagoon, swamp or marsh in which water collects and is connected to a river, creek, stream or watercourse
  • a floodplain.

Application process

Lodge

Please submit your completed application form with:

  • soil testing results
  • a survey of the storage area to work out dam capacity
  • a survey of biodiversity in the area (location dependent)
  • a hydrological report with a water balance study
  • engineering drawings detailing dam wall, spillway and outlet design
  • a geotechnical report with soil tests, the dam wall foundations, the ability of the dam to store water and any potential for leaks
  • an assessment of the downstream environment and vulnerability to flooding if the dam fails
  • an Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority clearance certificate.
