Authorisation to Keep Scheduled Medicines in a Medical Kit - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this authorisation if you intend to keep scheduled medicines in your medical kit.

This authorisation will allow you and other persons stated on the authorisation to:

  • administer schedule 3 substances
  • possess, supply, self-administer or administer to another person schedule 4 substances
  • administer or possess schedule 8 substances. 

 

You may also need authorisation if you live in a rural area, do not have easy access to medical care and intend to keep an emergency medical kit containing scheduled medicines.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must satisfy the agency that:

  • the professional advice or attendance of a health practitioner is not always reasonably available before administering the substances
  • the persons authorised to administer the substances are competent to safely handle and administer the substances.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

To maintain this authorisation, you must:

  • keep the contents in locked storage which cannot be accessed by a non-authorised person
  • record all use of medicines items in the kit in the relevant register
  • follow workplace policies and procedures, and you must report use of prescription only medicines (S4 and S8) to the supervising medical practitioner before use or as soon as practicable after use
  • report loss, misappropriation or theft to Medicines and Poisons Control
  • notify of any change of circumstances with regard to authorisation holders or kit contents such as expected staff changes, closure of site, stolen/missing kit contents
  • comply with the 'Exit Strategy', located in the resources.
