Permit to Purchase or Transfer Firearms - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to purchase, acquire or transfer ownership of a firearm, including firearms purchased as gifts. All sales must be arranged by a licensed gun dealer or conducted through your nearest police station. 

A separate permit to purchase or acquire a firearm is required for each firearm to be purchased or acquired.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible you must:

  • be over the age of 18
  • be subject to conviction checks and domestic violence or restraining order checks
  • be deemed a fit and proper person
  • be a resident of the Northern Territory
  • provide a statement of need to acquire category C, D and H firearms
  • submit an application to import firearms and weapons form in relations to overseas purchases.

You may also need to provide the following, if applicable:

  • interstate registration documents
  • documents relating to Information disclosure section
  • deceased estate documentation
  • club support to purchase or transfer a firearm - Category H.
