You will need this permit if you intend to conduct research on native species from land-based (terrestrial) or marine ecosystems.
You must get written confirmation about whether your proposed project is bioprospecting, as defined in the Biological Researches Act 2006.
When applying for a permit to undertake scientific research on wildlife, or for a special permit, you must provide written informed consent from the resource access provider. Additionally, you must provide one of the following:
- a signed benefit-sharing agreement, or
- proof that you have started the process to get a benefit-sharing agreement with the resource access provider
A benefit sharing agreement ensures the resource access provider is compensated for economic benefit arising from bioprospecting activities, and provides for the protection, recognition, and valuing of knowledge provided by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
To enter into a benefit-sharing agreement, you will need to negotiate a benefit-sharing deed.
