Pilotage Licence - Northern Territory

Description

Pilotage is conduct of a ship through a navigationally constrained area by a suitably qualified, experienced and licensed pilot. You will be required to apply for a pilotage licence in writing to a Pilotage Authority. 

There are three declared pilotage areas were you will be required to hold a pilogate licence in the Northern Territory:

  • Darwin
  • Grove
  • Groote Eylandt.

Exemptions

A ship's master may apply for an exemption from a pilotage licence if they frequent a port and can demonstrate local knowledge and ship handling skills in the vessel of which they are captain. 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a pilotage licence you will be required to demonstrate intimate knowledge of your home port and be highly trained in the art of ship handling.
