A Rideshare Licence (a sub-category of Special Passenger Vehicles) allows approved vehicles to be used to provide a transport service offered to passengers through an approved communications and dispatch service, specifically through a smartphone application-based booking.
Applicants have the choice to apply as a driver only, as the owner of a rideshare vehicle or both.
A rideshare vehicle is used to carry passengers with the services of a driver for a fare which is calculated through a smartphone. Payment for fares is only through electronic means.
In-service rideshare vehicles must not be older than nine years of age.
A $1 per trip levy applies to all point-to-point transport services (taxis, minibuses, private hire cars and rideshare). The levy may be included in the fare paid by the passenger through its app or absorbed by the transport provider. The levy must be paid to the NT Government by the rideshare network on a monthly basis.
