Spanish Mackerel Fishery Licence - Northern Territory

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to commercially fish for Spanish mackerel.

This fishery has 15 licences, but they are all currently allocated and no new licences will be issued. However, an existing licence may be purchased from other licensees, but are subject to a two for one transfer arrangement (eg applicants must buy two existing unrestricted licences, surrender both to Fisheries and be issued a fully transferable licence). Once a licence has been through the two for one process, a one for one transfer situation will apply.

Licence holders may use the following methods to catch Spanish mackerel:

  • troll lines
  • floating hand lines
  • rods.

Commercial fishers operate using a mothership and up to two dories. It is common for fishers to troll two to four lines behind a dory and up to eight lines from a mothership.
