Trepang Fishery Licence - Northern Territory


You will need to apply for a trepang licence, if you intend to commercially fish for trepang - otherwise known as sea cucumber, in the Northern Territory.

This fishery is restricted to six licences and all are currently allocated. No new licenses will be issued granted for trepang fishing, however this licence is transferable.

Existing licence holders may temporarily transfer (lease) or permanently transfer (sell) their licence on receiving the Director's approval. Stamp duty must be paid on the sale before the Director's approval.

$1,280 annual licence fee, plus NT Seafood Council Levy $265 transfer fee (2018-19).

Additional information

Most sea cucumbers are collected along the Arnhem Land coast, mainly around the Cobourg Peninsula and Groote Eylandt.

Sea cucumbers are harvested by hand, either by foot or whilst diving, usually on neap tides during the dry season when the water becomes clearer.

Sandfish are the most common species of sea cucumber taken.
