You will need this permit to establish a commercial operation of accommodation occupied or available for occupation by guests, in return for payment, on the basis of those guests sharing 1 or more of the following facilities:
- dormitories or bedrooms
- toilets
- bathrooms, showers, or other bathing facilities
- laundries
- dining facilities
- cooking facilities
- recreation facilities.
Shared facilities accommodation allows guests to stay for less than a specified period of time, which can change depending on where your business is located. Examples of shared facilities accommodation business can include:
- backpacker hostels
- boarding house
- guest house.
The following activities are not subject to the operation of the shared facilities accommodation:
- residential services
- accommodation regulated by Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008
- public housing
- home based business
- farm stay
- hotel, motel, or resort complex
- hospital, residential care facility, community residence, or retirement facility
- residential college or boarding school
- religious institution
- community title scheme
- dwelling house
- recreational accommodation for camps for school groups, girl guides, scouts or similar groups
- detention facilities.
