Biodiscovery collection authority - Queensland


You will need this authority if you intend to take small amounts of native biological resources (e.g. plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms that are native to Australia) from State Lands or Queensland waters for the purpose of seeking to identify bioactive compounds that may be used for commercial purposes (e.g. pharmaceuticals and insecticides).

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

Depending on the conditions placed on your authority and the commercial use of collected resources, you may need to:

  • meet all or some of the requirements of the compliance code
  • reach a benefit sharing agreement with the Department
  • develop a biodiscovery plan.


Three years


The authority lapses a year after it is issued if a benefit sharing agreement is not entered into within that period.
