Description

If you intend to own a cat, you may need to ensure it is registered with your local council.

A cat approval is for one to two cats per property. If you wish to keep more than two cats, you must apply for approval, either for three to six cats, or for a cattery. 

You will need to register your cat with your council within 14 days of it reaching 12 weeks of age. If you become an owner of a cat which is over 12 weeks of age, you will need to register your cat with your local council within 14 days, unless otherwise provided.

Eligibility requirements

Cats must be microchipped when:

  • sold (this is the seller's responsibility)
  • given away (this is the responsibility of the person giving away the cat)
  • before reaching the age of 12 weeks (this is the owner's responsibility).

You may have to comply with local laws regarding cat enclosures. Contact your local council for information on whether you need to meet specific enclosure requirements.

Duration

Annual approval needs to be renewed by 31 August each year.
