Dog registration - Ipswich City Council - Queensland

Description

You will need this registration if you intend to own a dog or keep dogs on your premises. You must register your dog with your council or local authority within 14 days of it reaching 12 weeks of age. If you become an owner of a dog which is over 12 weeks of age, you must register the dog within 14 days.

If your dog is classed as a restricted breed, you must indicate this in your registration application. Restricted dog breeds have specific conditions you will need to meet to keep your dog and to ensure public safety. Restricted dog breeds include:

  • Fila Brasilerio
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Japanese Tosa
  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Perro de Presa Canario
  • Canario.

Other requirements that you may be required to comply with include, but are not limited to:

  • fencing and enclosures
  • dogs per household
  • effective dog control
  • dog identification.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

You will not need to apply for this registration if you own:

  • a government entity dog (i.e. a police or customs dog)
  • another class of dog prescribed under a regulation or local law.

You will not have to microchip your dog if you can provide a signed veterinary surgeon's certificate proving that implanting your dog with a microchip is likely to be a serious risk to the dog's health.

Eligibility requirements

Dogs must be microchipped when:

  • sold (this is the seller's responsibility)
  • given away (this is the responsibility of the person giving away the dog)
  • before reaching the age of 12 weeks (this is the owner's responsibility).

Application process

Lodge

To register your dog, you must:

  • complete the approved form
  • pay the prescribed fee
  • if the dog is desexed, submit a signed veterinary surgeon's certificate stating that the dog has been desexed
  • if the dog is a restricted dog and is 9 months or older, provide a signed veterinary surgeon's certificate stating that the dog has either been desexed, or that desexing is likely to be a serious risk to the dog's health.

To change any information stated on the dog registration, you must:

  • complete the approved form
  • accompany the form with any other information or documents which enable your council or local authority to record the changed information
  • provide notice of the changed information within 7 days.
