Educational purposes permit - Queensland

Description

You need this permit if you intend to take, use and keep protected animals for educational purposes. Examples of educational activities include:

  • the collection of road kill (protected animals) for educational purposes (e.g. zoology or veterinary science students)
  • school field trip - spotlighting animals in a council reserve
  • university field trip where animals are captured and released
  • keeping native wildlife in a classroom for educational purposes.

This permit can only be issued for genuine educational purposes. A written statement detailing what educational and environmental messages will be delivered to students should be included with this application.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit you must not have a criminal conviction that relates to animal welfare issues or related conservation matters within the past three years.

Only least concern reptiles can be taken from the wild. An animal taken from the wild must be taken from within a one-kilometre radius of the activity location stated on the permit and must be released in the same place from which it was taken from the wild within two weeks of taking the animal.

All wildlife listed in the application must be obtained in the same way (i.e. either from a licensed breeder / pet shop or from the wild).

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will be required to submit a return of operations and a report within 10 business days after each period of 12 months from the date that the permit is granted. If the permit ends within a 12-month period, a return must be submitted within 10 business days of the expiry / surrender / cancellation of the permit.
