Electrical contractor's licence - Queensland


An electrical contractor licence is required if a person conducts a business or undertaking that includes the performance of electrical work.

Eligibility requirements

Eligibility requirements for electrical contractor licence -

An individual, partnership or corporation must:

  • have at least one qualified technical person
  • have at least one qualified business person (The technical/business person can be the one person)
  • satisfy the financial and insurance requirements
  • satisfy the Department's Chief Executive that the electrical work will be performed, or supervised by a qualified technical person under the persons electrical work licence.

Insurance requirements:

An applicant must provide the Departments chief executive evidence of public liability insurance for at least $5 million under a contract of insurance approved by the chief executive.

To satisfy this requirement, you need to obtain a certificate of currency or an alternative form of evidence from an Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) authorised insurer/s that confirms you have a policy with broadform public and products liability with a limit of indemnity of $5,000,000 (minimum). This policy must include cover for testing and certification of work and liability for goods in your care, custody or control arising from:

  • resultant injury, loss or damage arising from a faulty design where you design and install; and
  • resultant injury, loss or damage arising from incorrect advice where you give advice
  • consumer protection liability for $50,000; and
  • nominate that the insurance is provided for the purpose of meeting the insurance requirements for an electrical contractor licence under the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002.

A copy of the Certificate of Currency can be certified by a Justice of the Peace (qualified) or a Commissioner of Declarations, or verifies by an authorised officer using the Department's Document Declaration form.


The licence may be issued for a maximum of 1 year, with a renewal notice sent prior to the expiry of the electrical contractor licence.

Application process

You can obtain this licence by completing and submitting the appropriate application form, certified documents and scheduled fee to Electrical Licensing.

There is provision under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 that a holder of a current interstate Electrical Contractors Licence may satisfy the eligibility requirements for the qualified technical person/qualified business person for a Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence. Please contact the agency to verify eligibility.



This licence cannot be transferred.
