Description

You will need a licence if you intend to work as an individual field agent.

Field agents:

  • find and recover goods (repossession)
  • collect debts in person
  • serve documents (process serving).

Alternatively, you can work as a collection agent without a licence if you only:

  • collect debts but do not repossess goods or do process serving
  • contact debtors over the phone or in writing
  • perform evictions or vacant repossessions of real property.

If you intend to trade as a corporate field agent, you will need to hold a corporation licence. Your personnel must have individual licences too if they are:

  • directors of a company carrying out the work of a field agent
  • officer in charge of a regulated business.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an individual licence, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a suitable person.

There are no training requirements for field agent applicants. A criminal history check must be done for each person whose date and place of birth are stated on the application form.

To be eligible for a corporation licence, your company must have an individual licensee in charge of regulated business.

If you trade under your corporation’s name or registered business name, you must register the company as the owner of the business name. If you are partners with another company, they must also have a current licence.

Application process

When you lodge the form, you will need to:

  • pay the relevant fees (including a mandatory criminal history fee per person)
  • attach a formal identification document
  • attach 2 passport size photos of yourself.

Your formal identification document must be an original or certified copy of 1 of the following 4 documents:

  • Birth certificate or extract
  • Driver licence
  • Passport
  • Citizenship certificate.

The passport sized photographs of yourself must be certified by a person who:

  • is 18 or older
  • has known you for at least 12 months
  • is not your spouse or de facto partner
  • is not any other family member (by blood or marriage).

Approval time

Processing time is between 4 and 6 weeks
