Greenhouse gas exploration permit - Queensland

Description

You will need a greenhouse gas (GHG) exploration permit before exploration can take place for underground GHG storage reservoirs. This permit is only available through a tender process. A GHG permit allows you to explore for greenhouse gas storage reservoirs within the permit area. It also allows you to carry out injection testing with ministerial approval. Activities carried out by the permit holder must follow their approved work program.

Environmental approval for the site must be obtained before the tender process can begin. Native title considerations also need to be made before the permit can be granted.

Eligibility requirements

You need Ministerial approval and a Development Plan with an overview of proposed activities, including storage capacity and composition of GHG stream to be injected.

Applicants for a GHG permit or a GHG lease must take groundwater issues into account. Applicants must include a plan for the treatment and disposal of water used while carrying out authorised activities. For a GHG permit or a GHG lease, an environmental authority must be issued from the Department of Environment and Science before the permit or lease is granted.
