Description

You need a permit in order to keep:

  • more than 25 head of poultry on any land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained in a similar designation or precinct to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (poultry permit).
  • more than 25 pigeons on any land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained within a similar designation or precinct to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (bird permit).
  • more than 25 birds (other than poultry or pigeons) on any land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained in a similar designation or precinct to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (bird permit).
  • a horse on land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained within a similar designation or precinct to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (horse permit); or land used for:
    1. racing or trotting stables; or
    2. breeding of horses for sale; or
    3. boarding of horses for fee or reward (stable permit)
  • a pig on any land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained within a similar designation to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (pig permit).
  • an animal on any land other than land zoned rural, non-urban/limited development or land contained within a similar designation to a rural zone as described within a structure plan (animal permit).

A structure plan forms part of the Ipswich City Council town planning scheme and it designates preferred land uses.

The number of animals you may keep in a particular area depends on the size of your site.

  • obtain prior licensing from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection in order to keep native species.

  • the likely effect on the local environment and any possible pollution or other environmental damage
  • other relevant factors to the circumstances of the particular case.
