Permit to light a fire - Queensland

Description

You will need this permit to light a fire that does not meet the exemption conditions.

To obtain a permit, you must apply to your local fire warden. When approving your permit, the fire warden may impose conditions on a permit to reduce unwanted risk or nuisance to other people, property or to the environment. Your permit will set out the rules around how a fire is lit and maintained and lets the fire service know when you are using fire on your property.

Exemptions

Current exemptions include:

  • fires where the material to be burnt is less than 2 metres in any direction
  • cooking fires within a properly constructed fireplace
  • burning a dead beast
  • certain industry fires (e.g. burning of sawmill waste, burning of standing cane - note that specific conditions apply to these fires).

Eligibility requirements

You must contact your local council to ensure you meet any local law requirements that may apply to lighting and maintaining a fire.

You must provide owners and / or occupiers of adjoining land with 72 hours notice of the intention to apply for a permit and complete the application form.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will be issued the permit with conditions that must be met prior to, during and at the completion of the fire.
