Pilot licence / pilotage exemption certificate - Queensland

Description

All ships that are 50 metres or more proceeding within a Queensland compulsory pilotage area must either carry a licensed marine pilot or be under the command of a master who holds a Pilotage Exemption Certificate and Pilotage Area Endorsement for the pilotage area and a particular ship or class of ship.

Some pilotage areas have selected zones where ships less than 50 metres are required to engage the services of a licensed marine pilot.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a licence or pilotage exemption, you must:

  • be medically fit
  • hold an appropriate and valid licence to conduct the ship, or class of ships as its master
  • have appropriate ship handling ability
  • have a detailed knowledge of the Pilotage Area (or that part of the Pilotage Area for which the exemption is sought)
  • undertake the relevant training and examinations, including undertaking a prescribed number of trips as an observer.

Lodgement process

Lodge

The following must be lodged with this application:

  • evidence of identity
  • one colour passport size photograph
  • a certified copy of your appropriate valid licence to conduct the ship, or class of ship as its master issued under the Transport
    Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation or the law of the Commonwealth of Australia, another state or territory of Australia, or another country
  • certificate of medical fitness (as detailed in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels - Part D or Marine Orders - Part 9) dated within one year of this application
  • other prerequisites relevant to the class of licence / certificate being applied for, as described in the Maritime Safety Queensland procedure for licensing and training of marine pilots in Queensland. Contact the relevant Regional Harbour Master for further information
  • pay the prescribed fee (fees are subject to change).
