Prescribing approvals - medicines - Queensland

Description

You will need a prescribing approval to prescribe restricted medicines. Restricted medicines include approved opioids, amphetamines, methylphenidate and other restricted medicines.

There are 3 classes of prescribing approvals:

  • Queensland Opioid Treatment Program (QOTP)
  • amphetamine and methylphenidate (psychostimulant)
  • other restricted medicines.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

You will need to be authorised to prescribe medicines to be eligible for a prescribing approval. Persons authorised to prescribe medicines include:

  • dentists
  • medical practitioners
  • physician assistants
  • nurse practitioners
  • endorsed midwives
  • endorsed optometrists
  • endorsed podiatrists
  • podiatric surgeons.

You will also need to complete the required prescriber training to become a prescriber under the QOTP.

Duration

Typically prescribing approvals will not be issued for more than 2 years.

To apply to be a prescriber under the QOTP, you will need to complete and submit the application form to QOTP@health.qld.gov.au.

For all other non-QOTP prescribing approvals, you will need to complete and submit the application form to medicines.applications@health.qld.gov.au
