Radiation sources possession licence - Queensland


You require this licence if you wish to possess radiation apparatus or radioactive substances in Queensland.

Refer to the Radiation Safety Act Schedule 2 for the terms Radiation Source, Radioactive Material, Radioactive Substance, Radiation Apparatus. Also refer to the Radiation Safety Regulation Sections 4, 5, 6 & 7.

What are the prerequisites to obtaining this authority?

You should contact Radiation Health to obtain information on the requirements as they relate to the specific type of application you intend to make.


A licence remains in effect for the period stated on the licence, but not greater than three years.

Application process

You can obtain this licence by contacting Radiation Health to determine the most appropriate application form. The completed application can then be submitted to the Radiation Health Unit.

Additional documentation will be necessary. Please discuss your proposed application with Radiation Health prior to submitting the application.

The operation must comply with relevant safety related requirements which may be site and practice specific. These may refer to Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency or National Health and Medical Research Council codes, or Australian or International standards. There are also requirements in relation to training of staff, administrative procedures, approval of facilities, equipment, etc.

This licence cannot be transferred.
