Research or educational purposes permit outside protected areas - Queensland

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to take, use and keep protected animals for scientific research or educational activities outside of protected areas managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).

Examples of scientific research or educational activities include:

  • government departments conducting research
  • consultants conducting fauna surveys for an Environmental Impact Study
  • keeping native wildlife in a classroom for educational purposes
  • university field trips where animals are captured and released.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a research permit, you must:

  • be, or be associated with, a tertiary or similar institution, or an entity that is involved in scientific research
  • (for individuals) be receiving or have completed postgraduate training or a satisfactory level of competence in scientific research relevant to the activities proposed
  • be over the age of 18 if using a weapon to take an animal.

To be eligible for an educational purposes permit, you must:

  • not intend on gaining financial benefit from the activities proposed
  • hold a tertiary qualification or have demonstrated experience and knowledge relevant to the activities proposed
  • have experience in the care and husbandry of the species of animal
  • (for corporations) be an educational institution
  • be over the age of 18 if using a weapon to take an animal.

A permit cannot be issued if you have a criminal conviction that relates to animal welfare issues or related conservation matters within the past three years.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You are required to submit annual reports and / or return of operations each return period through Online Services.
