Security Licence (Guard) - Queensland


You require this licence if you possess a weapon or weapons whilst performing the duties of a security guard as an employee of a licensed security organisation or as a self-employed security guard.

As the licensee you can ONLY carry a weapon whilst performing security duties of a nature that necessitate or warrant the carriage of such a weapon and, especially where a shot-gun is concerned, having regard to the type of security service being provided and the degree of alarm the presence of the weapon will cause to any person.

As the licensee you are NOT to carry a weapon whilst performing private inquiry work, service process, crowd control, debt collection or door person duties.

You must lodge the application for renewal at a Queensland Police Station at least the day before the expiry date of the licence.

You do this by submitting a completed Form 6A - 'Application for Renewal of Licence' to a Queensland Police station.

Your application must be received before the day the licence expires.

Application forms for renewal will be posted to you from the Weapons Licensing Branch, Queensland Police Service. If you do not receive the forms prior to expiry of the licence, the onus is on you, the licensee, to obtain renewal forms from a Queensland Police station or from the website.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

You must:

  • be the holder of a current security provider licence under the Security Providers Act 1993 (security employees only) endorsed for cash in transit;
  • have obtained at least 18 years of age;
  • not be disqualified by the Weapons Act from holding a licence;
  • be a fit and proper person with specific reference to mental state, misuse of drugs offences, firearm offences and offences involving violence or threatened violence, or subject to an order under the Domestic Violence Act 1989.

In the 12 month period before making a licence application you must successfully complete a course approved for security guard licensing, namely specified units of competence from the Property Services Training Package CPP07, approved by the Commissioner of Police.

When you are applying for a licence as a sole security operator the following information is to be attached to the application:

  • a list of all your contracted clients, setting out the type of security duties required in respect of each client;
  • the procedure to be put in place should you be unable to meet the contractual duties due to illness or injury;
  • written confirmation that these arrangements are agreed to by the contracted clients;

You must ensure particulars relating to how you plan to meet the storage requirements of the Act are included, with council approval attached.

You must ensure the registered business name of the business is included in the application.

Where you are wishing to apply for a licence for Business Security, the following information is required:

  1. The Certificate of Business Name or Company Name and ASIC extract of office holders if there are proprietors.
  2. Details of any other person holding a Weapons Act licence in respect of the business.
  3. A description of business activities warranting the use of a firearm for security.
  4. Verification that you hold large sums of money (cash) or valuables for the purpose of carrying on the business.
  5. Full details of security measures utilised to safeguard business property, i.e. alarms, security bars, grilles, safes, vaults, use of security services, etc.
  6. Details of banking facilities utilities and the frequency of banking.
  7. Details of why alternate security or business practices cannot be utilised.
  8. What security procedures will be taken should you be required to travel.


This licence remains in effect for 1 year. You can apply for renewal from 60 days until 1 day prior to expiry.

You cannot transfer this licence.
