You will need this licence if you intend to possess a weapon or weapons whilst performing the duties of a security guard. A security guard is a person who patrols, protects, watches over or protects their own or someone else's property, as part of their own business or as an employee of a security organisation.
There are three categories of security licence (guard):
- employee - employed by a security organisation
- sole provider - works as a sole provider
- business - a person protecting their own property and not providing security services to others.
As the licensee you can only carry a weapon whilst performing security duties of a nature that necessitate or warrant the carriage of such a weapon and, especially where a shot-gun is concerned, having regard to the type of security service being provided and the degree of alarm in the presence of the weapon will cause to any person.
As the licensee you are not permitted to carry a weapon whilst performing private inquiry work, service process, crowd control, debt collection or door person duties.
