Self-insurance licence - Queensland

Description

This licence allows you to manage your own workers' compensation claims instead of paying workers' compensation premiums to WorkCover Queensland. Workers compensation is a system where an employer pays, or provides insurance to pay, the lost wages and medical expenses of an employee who is injured on the job.

This licence may be granted to an employer (single licence) or to a holding company and all wholly owned subsidiaries (group licence). Gaining this licence will provide you with full responsibility for the payment of claims liabilities and for the management of those claims. You will also be liable for any associated risk.

Self-insurance is only available to large organisations that employ at least 2000 full-time employees in Queensland.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to be a self insurer, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Employ at least 2000 full-time workers in Queensland
  • Have a satisfactory occupational health and safety performance history
  • Cover all workers employed in Queensland
  • Given the Workers' Compensation Regulator an unconditional bank guarantee or cash deposit
  • Have reinsurance cover
  • Have all workplaces accredited by the Workers' Compensation Regulator, or if not are adequately serviced by a rehabilitation and return to work coordinator who is in Queensland and employed under a contract
  • Have workplace rehabilitation policy and procedures in place.

Duration

Licences are issued for periods of up to four years, with the initial licence being for two years
