Tow truck assistant certificate - Queensland


You require this certificate to travel in a tow truck, in regulated areas, while the tow truck is:

  • attending the scene of a crash

  • to tow a police seized vehicle under the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000

  • From 16 April 2018, to remove vehicles from private property, where a written contract is in place between the tow truck licence holder and the property owner/occupier authorising the removal of the vehicle from the property. Once a written contract is in place, a Towing consent form must also be completed. This form is proof that the contract exists.

You are required to provide assistance to the tow truck driver when preparing a motor vehicle for towing, loading the vehicle and assist in cleaning up the scene of a crash efficiently and safely within regulated areas.

Eligibility requirements

You must be at least 16 years of age to be a tow truck assistant.


This certificate will remain in effect for 12 months. From 16 April 2018, you may choose between durations of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years.


Application process

You can obtain this certificate by completing a Tow truck driver/assistant's certificate application (F4481) and submitting it to a Department of Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre. An application fee must be paid when the application is lodged. 

For Evidence of identity you must produce the following documents with your application:

  • proof of identity documentation (please refer to the Evidence of identity information sheet (form F4362) or for requirements).

Your criminal and traffic history will be checked.

Transfer process

This licence cannot be transferred.

Additional information

A tow truck assistant can only operate under the authority when employed on or in connection with a tow truck.
