Tow truck licence - Queensland

Description

You require this licence if you intend to operate a business that employs accredited tow truck drivers and tow truck assistants to perform towing of vehicles in regulated areas:

  • from the scene of an incident
  • to remove police seized vehicles
  • to remove a vehicle from a private property when a contract is in place with the owners.

You can apply as an individual, business or company.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible you must:

  • conduct your business from premises owned or leased only by the licence holder
  • have an approved holding yard
  • obtain local government approval for the holding area
  • supply communication equipment suitable for the deployment of mobile units
  • offer towing service 24 hours a day 7 days a week
  • have a suitable criminal history and traffic history.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will be required to keep records in a towing authority book of each incident that each tow truck listed on the licence attends. You will be subject to regular audits to ensure you are complying with the conditions of your licence.

Apply

You must submit the following documents with the application:

  • vehicle registration and inspection certificates
  • proof of registration/incorporation (of the business name or company).
  • the criminal history for each applicant will be checked (if you are applying as a corporation, you will need a criminal history check for each executive officer of the corporation)

Transfer

This licence cannot be transferred.
