Tow truck licence - Queensland


You will need this licence if you intend to operate a tow truck business within the tow truck licensing scheme.

A tow truck must be a licensed tow truck if you tow motor vehicles from the scene of a crash, from a private property parking area or from a police seizure in regulated areas of Queensland.

The regulated areas for the scheme (both crash relating towing and private property towing) are:

  • The Shires of: Beaudesert, Boonah, Caboolture, Esk, Gatton, Kilcoy, Laidley, Maroochy, Noosa, Pine Rivers and Redland.
  • The Cities of: Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Caloundra, Gold Coast, Hervey Bay, Ipswich, Logan, Mackay, Maryborough, Redcliffe, Rockhampton and Toowoomba.
  • The areas made up of the parishes of:
    • Clement and Hinchinbrook in the county of Gray
    • Beor, Bohle, Coonambelah, Ettrick, Halifax, Hervey, Lansdowne, Magnetic, Margenta, Rokeby, Ross, Stuart and Wyoming in the county of Elphinstone.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • offer towing services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • conduct the business from premises owned or leased only by the licence holder
  • have a holding yard approved by departmental Transport Inspectors for the safe keeping of towed vehicles
  • ensure local government approval is obtained for the area where the holding yard is situated
  • supply communication equipment suitable for the deployment of mobile units, at the business premises, and in licensed tow trucks
  • have a suitable criminal history and traffic history.

Application process


To apply for a Tow Truck Licence, you must:

  • complete the application form and lodge it in person at a TMR customer service centre or QGAP office
  • provide evidence of identify (EOI) documentation for each person listed on the application. Information about EOI for individuals / organisations is available at (search evidence of identity)
  • pay the required licence and criminal history fees
  • after you lodge this form a TMR Transport Inspector will contact you to arrange inspection of the business premises, holding yards and tow trucks.


This licence cannot be transferred.
