Tow truck operator accreditation - Queensland

Description

You will need this accreditation if you intend to conduct a tow truck business. A tow truck business is a business or trade that involves the operation of 1 or more tow trucks to carry out:

  • the towing of a motor vehicle that is damaged in an incident in a regulated area from the scene of the incident
  • the towing of a motor vehicle that is seized in a regulated area from the place of seizure
  • private property towing.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for accreditation, you must:

  • offer towing services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • conduct the business from premises controlled by the accredited operator
  • have a holding yard approved by the agency for the safe keeping of towed vehicles
  • only use tow trucks authorised by agency
  • only use accredited tow truck drivers and assistants
  • have a suitable criminal history and traffic history.

You can only apply as an individual person, partnership or company.

Duration

New applicants will be granted a 1 year term and will have the option to select a term up to 5 years on renewal, provided there has been compliance with legislative requirements.

Application process

Apply

To apply for accreditation, you must:

  • lodge your completed application it in person at a Transport and Main Roads customer service centre or Queensland Government Agency Program Office
  • after lodgement, an agency inspector will contact you to arrange inspection of the business premises and holding yards.
