Valuer registration - Queensland

Description

You will need this registration if you intend to undertake valuation work. Valuations are the process of inspecting a property, ascertaining legal ownership and the interest held, and gathering relevant information such as the price that similar properties sell for. There are two types of valuation licence that you can register for:

  • valuer registration (standard entry)
  • specialist retail valuer listing.

You can also apply to be a specialist retail valuer, which enables you to conduct formal rental determinations, where a landlord and tenant cannot agree on current market rent for a retail shop.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the valuer (standard entry) licence, you must:

  • have completed a degree or post-graduate degree approved by the Board or be a member of an approved institute with recognised certification
  • be of good fame and character and a fit and proper person
  • have sufficient practical experience (at least 2 years)
  • have passed the Board's examination, which includes an interview before the Board and the presentation of four sample Queensland valuation reports.

If you hold an unrestricted Western Australia land valuers licence or New Zealand valuer registration you may be eligible for mutual recognition.

To be eligible for the specialist retail valuer listing, you must:

  • be a registered valuer
  • have sufficient experience in retail rental determinations to competently determine rental disputes
  • have passed the Board’s examination, which includes an interview before the Board and the presentation of two sample rental valuation reports of Queensland retail shop leases.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

All registered valuers must, unless exemption applies, participate in at least 10 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) that assist in maintaining and improving your competence in the profession.

Specialist retail valuers are required to undertake at least 5 of the ten hours of CPD specific to retail rental valuations.

Duration

This registration remains in effect for 12 months. A renewal notice is issued annually.
